The Big Valley is an American television Western which ran on ABC from 1965 to 1969. It was created by A.I. Bezzerides and Louis F. Edelman. The producer was Levy-Gardner-Laven. Associate producer Lou Morheim performed the same function on the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven. The stirring theme music was composed by George Duning. Paul Henreid, of Casablanca fame, directed a number of episodes. Four Star Television produced the series.

The TV series was based loosely on the Hill Ranch located at the western edge of Calaveras County, not far from Stockton (one episode places the Barkley Ranch a few hours ride from town while another has Jarrod riding past a Calaveras County sign on his way to the TV series' ranch). The Hill Ranch existed from 1855 until 1931, exceeded 1,000 acres, and had the Mokelumne River running through it. Lawson Hill ran the ranch until he was murdered in 1861. His wife Euphemia (aka "Auntie Hill") then became the matriarch. During their marriage they had four children, one daughter and three sons. Today, the location of the ranch is covered by the waters of Lake Camanche. A California State historical marker standing at Camanche South Shore Park mentions the historic ranch.

The Television series seemed to be dependent generally on the Hill Ranch which is then located near the western fringe of Calaveras County, some distance coming from Stockton. One of its episodes had the made the Barkley Ranch seen to be a few more hours ride on the way to the ranch where the TV series takes place. Actually the Hill Ranch has been around since 1855 up to 1931and has surpassed 1,000 acres which is for about 4.0 km2, where the Mokelumne River runs through it. There was a murder event in 1861 when Lawson Hill took over the ranch. Aunti Hill who portrayed Eupheia took over as the matriarch. They were able to marry and bore 4 kids including a daughter and three sons. If you will look at it today, the positioning of the farm is protected by the rich waters of Lake Camanche. This is one California state historical marker which stands at Camanche South Shore Park and is definitely regarded as a historic ranch.

There is this main character of the TV series includes Victoria Barkley who was the wealthy widow (Barbara Stanwyck). She is influential being in the 19th century setting she became the master of the Berkley ranch. As a matter of fact, the refusal of Stanwyck to depict Barkley as for being vulnerable has been questionable during the time. The husband of Barkley, Thomas, ended up being murdered 6 years preceding that of when the series started. There are 112 episodes all on all and Stanwyck made an appearance on 103 episodes in this particular TV series which makes her that actor having the most volume of episodes in the Big Valley series.
