Cagney & Lacey is an American television series that first aired on the CBS television network for seven seasons from March 25, 1982 to May 16, 1988. It is considered to be American television's first serious drama series with two female leads[citation needed]. A police procedural, the show starred Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless as New York City police detectives who led very different lives: Christine Cagney (Gless) was a single, career-minded woman, while Mary Beth Lacey (Daly) was a married working mother. The series was set in a fictionalized version of Manhattan's 14th Precinct (Midtown South), which in real life is located at 357 West 35th Street.

Al Waxman co-starred as Cagney and Lacey's supervisor, Lt. Bert Samuels. Dan Shor joined the cast from 1985 to 1986 as detective Jonah Newman. Dick O'Neill played a recurring role as Cagney's alcoholic father, Charlie Cagney, a former NYPD officer who regaled her with stories of the old days; Christine later fought alcoholism as well.

Getting To Know More About the TV Series Cagney & Lacey

Those who have loved watching various American TV series before may find Cagney & Lacey one of the best options back then to watch. This particular television series aired on CBS network form March 1982 to May 1988. The series were able to complete seven seasons of airing. The show stars Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless being two of the most prominent N.Y. City police detectives who both had their own different lives to live.

Christine Cagney who was a single and a career oriented type of woman was portrayed by Sharon Gless while Tyne Daly a working mom who’s married is portrayed by Mary Beth Lacey. The set was more of a re-creation of the fourteenth Precinct in Manhattan, which is located at 357 West 35th Street in true life.

Other characters in the series include Lt. Bert Samuels portrayed by Al Waxman together with other co-stars such as Victor Isbecki, Paul LaGuardia, Martin Cove, Marcus Petrie and many more. Most of them have their own individual roles which spiced up every particular episode in this TV series.

The major characters of Cagney & lacey were able to get the Emmys for Best Lead actress in drama for about 6 years straight and which was on great achievement for the cast and the show itself.

The Christine Cagney role was then originally portrayed by Loretta Swit in its television movie in the year 1981 however she was then forced to pass up the opportunity of playing the role since she couldn’t get out of a certain contract she signed with another company during that time.

Then instead of being a movie it now turned out to be a series which first aired having 6 episodes and as per its midseason replacement in the year 1982, Meg Foster them played the role of Cagney. From then on the show has been distinguished by many and was able to pick up its regular season by 1982 to 1983. However, Sharon Glass took over the role since CBS sees Foster being somehow a little too aggressive and seems to be regarded as a lesbian as she portrays the role.
